On this special page, you can find Marcel Wanders’ design pieces presented at events or special exhibitions over the last few years.
Portrait (2018) is considered a democratic sculptural piece inspired by and for everyone that symbolizes new beginnings. This two metres high ’egg’ is an organic cork object with an imposing presence and represents warm and unconditional dreams. But Portrait is not an ordinary sculpture because it requires your participation! This rotating egg transforms into a wall of wishes. The dreams, wishes, and goals can be sealed within the work using so-called wishpins. The pins are marked with the letter M for Moco Museum/Marcel, or viewed upside down, W for wishpin/Wanders.
Da Vinci’s inventive, versatile design has always been a guide to Marcel. During Salone Del Mobile 2019 in Milan, Marcel Wanders paid homage to the first designer in history, Leonardo Da Vinci, and celebrated his 500 years while transforming the iconic Leonardo Horse. Inspired by its original form in 1492 and perhaps even more by its incompletion, Marcel Wanders joined an exhibition that included thirteen designers who recreated their version of the horse in actual size, standing in front of the Milanese Hippodrome.
1993 was an important year in the history of Dutch design: Droog was born! Droog was a collective of young Dutch designers who introduced a new trend. The name Droog means ’dry’ in Dutch, and it was chosen to emphasize the pure interest in design without any unnecessary accessory elements. These young Dutch designers were committed to reusing everyday objects with a down-to-earth mentality. Besides many significant Dutch designers, Marcel Wanders was part of this collective as well. In 2023, during Salone del Mobile in Milan, Droog’s 30th anniversary was celebrated with a unique exhibition at Triennale Milano.
The Fiore Fossile was designed for the Duson Gallery in 2023. Their owner, Mr. Yangsoo Kim, asked the five designers for this project to design a table made of Mother of Pearl. A renowned master craftsman from Seoul realized the wooden structure and the mother of pearl. Other designers are Stefano Giovannoni, Elena Salmistraro, Marco Zanuso, and Young hee Cha. Each designer designed a table that was produced in Korea.
On the occasion of the Salone 2024, Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte presented the 8th edition of Doppia Firma – Dialogues Between Design and Artisanal Excellence. Marcel Wanders, among 15 other distinguished designers, was invited to create a unique piece. The result was not just one, but three exquisite Big Shadow lamps, a collaborative effort between the Milanese bronzesmiths Ambrogio Carati and his sons Ernesto and Francesco, and De Castelli.
Silver eggs and a giant floating pot are among the inflatables installed outside the Dutch parliament in The Hague as part of BlowUp Art The Hague 2024 festival. Amongst other four designers, Marcel Wanders created a cluster of egg-shaped inflatables for this installation. The majority feature mirrored surfaces that reflect their surroundings, while one is decorated with a colourful pattern. The eggs seem to touch the ground lightly on their weighted narrow ends and move gently in the wind.
